discovered a new galaxy - produces only 250 a year

A new galaxy was discovered by astronomers and named after the SMM J2135- 0102. The extraordinary discovery was made to obtain the first direct measurement of the size and brightness of the star-forming regions in a galaxy far, thanks to a chance discovery made with the APEX telescope.

The galaxy is so distant its light has taken so long to reach that we see it as it was 10 billion years ago. A "gravitational lens" magnifies the cosmic galaxy, providing an image so close that it would be otherwise impossible to achieve: a stroke of luck that has proved to be a busy and vigorous star-forming galaxies in the early universe, with stars forming nurseries 100 times faster than the nearest galaxies.

The research is published online in the journal Nature in "Intense star formation regions in a compact Within resolved galaxy at z = 2.3.

Astronomers were observing a massive cluster of galaxies with the telescope Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) at submillimetre wavelengths, when have found a new galaxy and brighter than ever before, more distant from us of storage of the brightest stars and galaxies never before seen at submillimetre wavelengths themselves.

is so bright because the dust grains in the galaxy shine after being heated by starlight. The new galaxy was christened with the name of SMM J2135-0102.

"We estimate that SMM J2135-0102 is producing stars at a rate equivalent to only about 250 a year - says Carlos De Breuck ESO, a member of the group - The star formation in its larger cloud is different from that in 'local Universe, but our observations suggest anche che dovremmo essere in grado di usare una fisica di base simile a quella delle più dense regioni di formazione stellare nella galassie vicine per capire come nascono le stelle in queste galassie più distanti.

La nuova galassia SMM J2135-0102 è così brillante proprio grazie al massiccio ammasso di galassie which is in the foreground. The enormous mass bends the light of distant galaxies, acting as a gravitational lens.

So how does a telescope magnify and brighten the distant galaxy, and thanks to the fortuitous alignment of the cluster and the distant galaxy, the latter is magnified 32 times.

"The enlargement shows the galaxy with unprecedented detail, although it is so distant that its light has taken about 10 billion years to reach us," says Mark Swinbank of Durham University, lead author of the article reporting the discovery.
